β Aspergilloma (Fungal Ball) form when Aspergillus spores grow into a clump inside lung cavities. These are often seen in people with preexisting lung diseases. While aspergillomas may not always cause symptoms, they can sometimes result in a persistent cough or coughing up blood.
β Allergic Aspergillus Sinusitis affects the sinuses, causing inflammation and congestion due to an allergic reaction to Aspergillus spores.
Symptoms of aspergillosis can vary depending on the type and severity of the infection.
β ABPA: Wheezing, shortness of breath, fever, coughing up brownish mucus, and chest discomfort.
β CPA: Fatigue, weight loss, persistent cough, and coughing up blood.
β Invasive Aspergillosis: Fever, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, and, in severe cases, neurological symptoms like seizures if the infection spreads.
β Aspergilloma: Cough, coughing up blood, and chest discomfort.
β Allergic Sinusitis: Nasal congestion, sinus pain, and loss of smell.
Certain factors can increase the risk of developing the condition:
β People undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplants, or using immunosuppressive drugs are particularly vulnerable.
β Lung diseases like asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD, or tuberculosis can make the lungs more susceptible to Aspergillus.
β People with allergic conditions like chronic sinusitis are at higher risk of ABPA and allergic sinusitis.
β Jobs involving significant exposure to mold, such as farming or construction work, may increase risk.
Diagnosing aspergillosis can involve multiple tests depending on the suspected type:
β Imaging tests: X-rays or CT scans can identify fungal balls, cavities, or other lung abnormalities.
β Blood tests: These check for antibodies or immune responses to Aspergillus.
β Sputum culture: A sample of mucus is tested for the presence of Aspergillus.
β Biopsy: In some cases, a tissue sample may be collected to confirm the infection.
β Bronchoscopy: A flexible tube is inserted into the lungs to collect tissue or fluid samples for analysis.
Treatment varies based on the type and severity of aspergillosis.
β Antifungal Medications: Invasive aspergillosis and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis typically require antifungal drugs. Treatment may last weeks to months depending on the severity of the infection.
β Corticosteroids: ABPA often requires corticosteroids to reduce inflammation in the lungs. Antifungal medications may also be prescribed to control fungal growth.
β Surgical Intervention: In cases of aspergillomas causing persistent symptoms, surgery may be necessary to remove the fungal ball.
β Management of Allergies: Allergic aspergillus sinusitis can be managed with antifungals, nasal corticosteroids, and sinus surgery if needed.
While itβs impossible to completely avoid Aspergillus spores, you can take steps to lower your risk:
β Avoid areas with heavy mold exposure, such as construction sites, basements, or compost piles.
β Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to reduce airborne spores indoors.
β Wear a mask if working in dusty or mold-prone environments.
β If you have a weakened immune system, talk to your doctor about antifungal medications for prevention.
