What is ADHD?

ADHD refers to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is a chronic condition with a combination of problems including hyperactivity, impulsivity and difficulty keeping attention. Children with ADHD may outgrow their symptoms with age if properly treated and diagnosed at an early age.

What are the signs and symptoms of ADHD?

The main symptoms of ADHD include inattention and hyperactivity. Based on the types of major symptoms present, ADHD can be of three types-

  • Predominantly inattentive
  • Predominantly hyperactive
  • Combined

The two types of symptoms include:

Inattentiveness symptoms
  • Child makes careless mistakes
  • Child does not pay attention to things
  • Child has trouble staying focused
  • Child has difficulty in following instructions
  • Child has trouble organising tasks
  • Child is easily distracted
Hyperactivity symptoms
  • Child often fidgets or squirms
  • Child is always in motion
  • Child struggles with staying seated
  • Child talks too much
  • Child blurts out answers or interrupts the person speaking
  • Child has difficulty waiting for turns
  • Child interrupts others activities

Is ADHD curable?

ADHD is not completely curable in the sense that any definitive treatment of ADHD has not been found. ADHD can definitely be managed with medication and behavioural therapy. An early and adequate management of ADHD leads to better prognosis in children and more controlled symptoms.

How is ADHD managed?

ADHD is managed with the right combination of medications and therapy. Therapy is important for all children with ADHD but the need for medicines is decided based on individual cases.

  • Medicines : Some types of medicine which can help to slow down the brain, activate the part that helps to pay attention and improve self control are used for ADHD.
  • Behavioural therapy for children: Behavioural therapy for children can help them develop behavioural, social, emotional and planning skills which are deficient in children with ADHD.
  • Parent coaching: The aim of parent coaching is to help parents learn the best possible methods of responding to behavioural problems of their children.
  • School support: Teachers who are specially trained to handle children with ADHD can help them with education and other activities.
